Checklist to move with kids!

What are your plans for relocation? Got excited with the idea of moving to a new home? The excitement is quite obvious but it may reduce in the case when you have kids to move along. Making children understand for moving to a new place is difficult. Here are a few things to do, to lead up your big move:

 

2 months before the move

• Research for good schools- Begin your search by searching for a renowned school for your children. Check the surroundings and community also before finalizing it. This will help you to get an idea of whether the school you have selected is suitable for your children or not. 

• Make your children understand- Be clear and soft with your tone of voice and speak to your child regarding the big event that is soon going to enter their lives. Provide the estimated time of your move and ask them to be ready. Give them time to think and understand things. By doing this, you may get some positive feedback from them for sure. You may want to help your kids come up with a fun plan to keep in touch with friends, such as video chats, phone calls, etc.

• Show your kids the place you are moving- To make your kids more interested, show them the place where you are taking them. You can either use a computer or mobile phone and Google the pictures of that particular city or it will be much better if you directly take them to visit that place in real. Find a new park, museum, or any other area that they can look forward to and get excited about.

• Involve them in the planning process- Assign a few minor tasks to your child, you can ask him to search for the best places located in the city your relocating. Let them create a list of the places they want to see on arrival and things that they would like to do on reaching there.

• Get started with the school transfer process- Inform about the change in your kid’s school. That way, you and the school authorities will have enough time to get the paperwork done to transfer your child to the new school. 

• Hunt for a moving expert- Find, compare, and finalize a reputable, professional, and experienced mover. Make sure the company has the appropriate knowledge to pack and move children's stuff. Get a moving estimate to know the exact expenses so that there would be no surprise on a moving day, and you can focus on other tasks along with keeping your kids happy. 

 

1 month before the move

• Cross-check the received documents- Double check that your child’s new school authorities have received all the information and the documents from their previous school, and verify that everything has been performed properly. 

• Take a short tour- Let your kids mix up with their new neighbors, and keep it as exciting as you can, if possible, take a tour of your new home and neighborhood. Go sightseeing and visit the popular destination of that place so your children can enjoy their new surroundings. If your new location is too far, then you can also make the entire tour virtual. Show them the videos and pictures of the beautiful places located there.

• Pack essentials- Start with packing all the essential items, including your documents such as birth certificate, medical records, other identification documents, etc. Also, keep their copies with you and store it in a safe place. 

• Sort and donate the goods- Make your kids the part of item sorting process so that they can help you out in getting rid of the items that no longer fit and serve your purpose. Donate the articles that you do not use anymore. 

• Schedule your moving day- Book your moving company well in advance to avoid missing out on your desired day. 

 

1 week before

• Plan a farewell- Well, in between the tedious process of moving, you need to relax. Throw a farewell, invite friends and family to create a joyous atmosphere.

• Prepare activity bag- Pack games, coloring books, toys, video games, and other items that will keep your kids busy without getting bored while traveling. 

• Take pictures of your items- Click photos of everything you are boxing and planning to box up to keep the record and condition of the goods you are moving. This will also give you an idea of what exactly is being packed. 

• Label the boxes- label the boxes according to the type of material it has stored in it along with writing the name of the room to which a box belongs. 

• Arrange funds- While executing a crucial process like relocation, you cannot lose control of the funds. You must have relevant funds available with you all the while. 

• Review packed goods- Double check that all items are packed properly for the trip that is soon going to start.

After move

• Unpack your child’s belongings first- To make your children feel like home, it is advisable to unpack their belongings first. Set their room in a similar way that was previously arranged at your old home. 

• Tour your new house- Help your kids get familiar with their new home so they can feel more comfortable. 

• Meet neighbors- Say hi to your new neighbors and help your children in making new friends. 

• Remain in touch- Help your kids stay in touch with your family members from their old city so that they still feel attached. 

• Relax and take a deep breath- Now, your move is finished, sit back and relax.
